Day 3 of Kates career Journal
PROJECT NATAS.
Project natas is the scary project I started in e-media and chemistry sort of. After long conversations with V about God, and having to draw up an e-media project, I stumbled upon drawing some weird things in Spanish while JC wasn’t accompaning me. These creatures I had drawn, were remniscent of clowns and skeletons. I kept drawing them, differently, until I decided they were project natas. The original picture for e-media (if you’ve seen it, the hand grabbing the flower) was supposed to be panned out more, and if it was fully done as an animation (I didn’t get that far) you would have seen the man picking up the flower turn into this clown skeleton-like creature. I’m not too sure on how to explain it, because I started it, but currently have no hook or middle or ending.

~~~Okay because Word was gay and turned me off after I wrote two paragraphs here, I’ll try to explain. How is a cup a cup? How did we give it that name, and is that the ALL-knowing word for cup? When we look at a small container that can hold liquid, why cannot we call it a made up name like, an emryl? Or something weird that we decide to call it. Because God had given us the free will (but still strict enough) to know what that container will be called. The name-er of the cup had chosen that name on his own, but God knew that what we would choose. If, in fact the namer had said ‘this will be called an emryl’, God would have known. IF in fact God did not know we said that, we would prove god wrong. And that’s impossible. Right?
We Live our lives bound to what’s what. We live in the world we live in, despite if we know it is a reality, a fabrication, or all screwy compared to the perfection; because perfection doesn’t exist. We don’t know if what we’re doing is the right thing, but it seems to keep the earth moving, and that’s what matters to those who take life simplistically. Those however, try to figure out our world might be left in a stump on reality.
Another example would be such like this. You try to say hello to someone who doesn’t know your language, nor do you know his or hers. This would seem to prove problematic as we both have words for a ‘hello’. The universal language however is sign language, body language, etc. If you waved your hand at said person, they would instantly know that that’s a ‘hello’ and wave back. However. if they had a poking motion for a 'hello' driven into their brains, they would have practically no idea what your talking about.
My point is, we don’t exactly know what life we’re living. We don’t know if this is reality, if we live in a fabrication where everything god speaks of is to be fed to us for understanding and survival, or this is LIFE. But those people who spend there lives trying to figure it out, will die and you know the first words out of their mouth when they die? “ah. Should have checked that in my calculations.” And that’s that.
You cannot prove God wrong. Right?
Taking that idea, I formed portions of the natas story. First I must explain a large portion of the plot device, ever heard of a term known as dogma? Good because I didn’t either when I first learned of it. But when you’ve watched the movie Dogma as many times as I, you develop an understanding, even if im not extremely knowledgable on the ways of the catholics. BASICALLY, in most teachings, god is infoulable. Aka, he cannot be proven wrong. Its why hes god. (yes im refering god as a guy get over it.) In the movie dogma, two angels were condemned by god to live in a world between hell and Heaven for eternity for there wrongdoing. Earth.God had told them they were not allowed in hevan. The plot of the story was that these two men were going to pass through an arch at a catholic church that during that day of celebration, the arch would wipe all of your sins. Therefore…after the men passed through the arch and were killed, they had a clean slate and would go to heaven Since god had already condemned them from Heaven, such would defeat god. Thus turning the world into irreversable peril and basically life would go BACKWARDS and come to not exist. After watching this movie enough times, I decided to go get the real meaning (wikipedia ftw). And so wiki tells me that its the “established belief or doctrine held by a religion, ideology or any kind of organization, thought to be authoritative and not to be disputed, doubted or diverged from.” ‘You cannot prove god wrong.’ Therefore. Saying that a cup was a emyrl in this world AND PROVING IT, could cause dogma. But no one can prove that a cup is an emryl so that’s that. In my story however, logic isn’t present. Well. It is, but its more of a parallel world.
Instead of Satan being a rebel angel as found out by the movie dogma (yay for movies teaching me the bible), satan in Project natas was a man NAMED natas on earth. God only had a handful of people on earth to begin with, and chose natas to play the ‘role’ of an opposite of God. Natas was asked to choose his own name, his name backwards, satan. When I say role, natas comes to learn from god, that In several failures of trying to create a utopian world, this world would be taught ‘good’ and ‘bad’. Going into detail, god states that a whole world of perfect people who were all the same never. Did. Anything. Therefore the perfect world plummetted. There was one sound. One job. One this one that. Nothing past that perfect part got done. (in perspective, if in our world the best paying job is the perfect job, then everyone would be a doctor. How are you a doctor in a world where all your patients are also doctors? The overload of doctors leads to no money being created. Those who are doctors aren’t getting paid for there service because no one is using it, and in return those who are hurt don’t go to doctors because THEY are the perfect doctors.) Another example is yes, fairly oddparents, where timmy wishes for everyone to be the same, and they all end up looking exactly the same gray little blobs.
So basically, god decided that this world needed the balance he was practicing. ‘good’ would be those who understood the rules written down by god and those who went above and beyond those rules to make things better for OTHERS. ‘bad’ would be those who went against the rules written by god and caused turmoil for other people. Good people were generous, bad people were selfish. We all know the difference between good and bad because we were taught it. And in this fresh starting earth, people began to learn the concept. As the placeholders of the concept, God stood at the top of ‘good’ while Natas stood at the bottom of ‘bad’. Natas was not chosen because he was a bad person, rather, he was chosen to be able to deal above average WITH bad people. So, once in a while, when the bible needed writing, the long written battle between God and Satan would ensue. Because even God created Satan (by both the bible and my story), God would always win. And this went on for YEARS. Two mellinia in fact. Secretly though, a bit of selfishness began to build inside natas. Living eternally in Gods shadow did suck just a bit. So he started working on a project. A project that in 2000 he would unveil in the notable mellinia fight. During the battle, Natas unveiled a mask, one to fit the size of his face, to God. God, believing Natas was trying to ‘spice up the fight’ began to play along to this ‘heated battle’ by taunting Natas. “whats a mask going to do to the great God?”. Natas placed the mask over his face. This transformed him into a comical looking skeletal body, and his still flesh-like fingers pierced into the skeletal body, pulling out his heart and holding it in his hand. God, by now completely confused, and did NOT KNOW what this was. God did not make it. This form allowed Natas to defeat god this time, because the form was invincible. God was infoulable. Beating god was unheard of. And here Natas did it. Therefore, Dogma occurred. Instead of reversing the world however, it merely struck a sudden change in Gods personality. Confiscating the mask from natas, God dissappeared for a year. The next year, Natas and God did battle once agan, but this time, god used the mask. The problem with the mask, Natas feared, was that it was imperfect. Used to power it were the souls of the underworld, those of the ‘bad’. Natas was able to wield it because he had lived in hell for 2 mellinia. He adapted, therefore the hate and the anger that was inside the mask could not reach him.
But god never had ‘bad’.
The power of the mask was too much for him, defeating natas easily and having god go on a bloodthirsty rampage. In september of 2001, god would land 4 planes to there impending doom. This was the START of what would be many crazed ordeals on earth. God would not put down the mask until he was pulled out of the skeletal state. Natas knew of its only true weakness, but was not able to find it when God himself used it. He would have to rely on those created by god during this time of turmoil to have to power to find it. And many masks later….he found the right one. But it was up to him to decide. Save the planet and defeat god himself? Or have god destroy the planet in his crazed wake……
Now im gonna pull an idea from my own portion of my story. In this version of our worlds events, 9/11 is caused by God. Obviously I don’t believe this. But, some people do. And this is what mocks it. The people, the taliban who DID do it believe that suicide bombings are ‘for allah.’ Usually stating that allah told them to do it. And then, this is also a mock on those who blame god for all there problems. Just as we go to god when we need help, anytime we are down on there luck, we blame him.
This is really where I am at. I have no clue how I should make the main character, or his personality. So I’d like some feedback from you. If the worlds creator was destroying the world, how would you take it if you were the ONLY one who could stop him?
oooKAY.
Day 2 of Kates Career Journal
Music and Advice
I originally tried thinking of topics I hadn’t discussed but I really pretty much got it all generally so I’m going to go into some more detail on certain subjects.
Soundtracks is a big thing for me. I’m not even adequetly allowed to judge good music because I listen to practically all of it, but I have absolutely no shyness in telling you if I don’t like something. Raps never been my forte, but I do have a couple of songs on my zune. I’m not fond of korean or chinese music, I don’t particularly like the languages so, (oh and a lot of chinese music proves the american stereotype of Ching chang wing wang) but yeah that’s about it for my hates.
I like mostly everything else, but soundtracks and songs are two very different things. Actually 3 things. You have (sometimes) in the gaming world:
-A theme song
-A Soundtrack (though this is more prone to movies than games but I wont throw it out)
-And Musical score.
Imo a theme song isn’t needed, but most likely does make it easier to some gamers to reference games using there theme song (as addresssed last essay, I can say ‘WH-HI!~~” and someone like Mal or Ashly would know what i'm referencing.) A musical score however, is critical. The mood is set by the music, which has the general ‘happy sad angsty anxious nervous devious etc etc..” emotions to set songs. That SOMETIMES is a good thing, but it all depends on the series. In Naruto (first arc), Toshiro Matsuda has themes for many themes, and while they are insanely repetitive, you hum along when theres a fighting scene, or you hum to the funeral of the 3rd hokage. It actually was WEIRD when they added completely new music to Shippuden, because you expect gaaras death to have at least some ‘sadness and sorrow’ in it.
Anime and games, even though they are thrown into the same category A LOT of times, do not work on the same music as you’d think. Games cannot have changing theme songs every 15 hours, because in games, you have to keep music going for 40+ hours. I’ll cite my sources here, watching nobou uematsus biography taught me that, that games arent movies with 1-2 hours worth of music plus 5-6 theme songs. Unless you’re making a high school musical game, theme songs aren’t awfully intertwined.
Excellent examples of musical score is obviously Nobou Uematsu, some of my other favorites include Pokemon (if a song from one of the games you havent played in like 4 years pops into your head during the middle of chemistry, I’ll deem that music pretty good. But I still don’t know why I would have the goldenrod city theme in my head during chemistry………) Some very powerful scores have to be the God of War score. Nothing is better than fighting mythological monsters with a kick ass rock-God score going in the background.
Once again, I have no background in music. I can play like 6 notes to a theme of anything on the piano and clearly guitar hero or drum master don’t count. From this I’ll jump into my next matter. I need some help.
I am an extremely stubborn person, I won’t admit help from people, because I have a large ego. At least that’s what I THINK I am. I’ve been proven otherwise though. My neighbor says im very caring to little stevie and more patient than any teenager she knows. Of course I don’t believe my 55 year old neighbor has many teenager friends…unless you count her 2 30+ years old daughters who still act like teenagers. I know I need help, but usually I’m more critical about the help than getting help from it. I’ll most likely never ask a person I know on how to draw. When you draw since 3rd grade spending more years asking for help and getting it thrown in your face or told to ‘trace’, you don’t want help from people. But I know I need it.
In my art skills I need to improve on the 3 Ps:
Proportion
Perspective
And Pretty outfits XD
As for proportion I am a lot better than what I was, but I still draw the head first and foremost than anything, which is a VERY difficult habit to break. Next comes perspective, which ties a lot into proportions, but basically, most of my drawings are very simplistic (character + flat bg) or no BG. So I need to work on that as well, and finally, for lack of a letter P, Pretty outfits.
I am god awful at designing outfits. I base everyone on what I wear, tshirts and jeans. Or baggy jeans. Sometimes they have excessive pockets. Really there isn’t much variation in my outfits. But I need to work on them dearly because even I am sick of jean/tshirt people. Some good examples of good outfit desiging has to be top of my list, Soul calibur. I buy the game to look at the people, not for there realism but the intricate and differing outfits. I mean, in this latest incarnation SC4, the spectrum is very wide:
-Siegfried is wearing an all crystal(or ice) looking armor
-Yun seong is a pirate this time around :\
- to defeat the point of soul calibur (of which in many fans eyes is a boob game; every woman has a skimpy outfit) they go ahead and make Hilde, the princess in all armor .
- Tira is on the lines of a crazed circus performer
-and Zasalamel is like the game version of moses. But black. I don’t know XD
EDIT: okay he looks more like Samuel Jackson as a bad guy in white robes. OXTOPUS?
And even though they could have been like ‘samurai era’ and made them all samurai, they chose not to and broaden there horizons. What fascinates me even more is how these characters live in the 16th century world and really all fit in. Amazing.
As for bad clothing design, one word tetsuya, you’ve got to stop with the madman zippers and excessive pockets. And fishnet. On guys. While this DIDN’T bother me originally, either his characters look like japanese boybands(the prince in ff13versus) or rejects (tidus ? I love tidus but his outfit is a bit silly.) Then comes vaan. Whoever decided on vaan is either gay, in love with gays, or Sai. Its probably Sai.
I’ll need help with the writing as I stated in Day one, I know for a fact im not a writer, so bear with me. And the musical score portions most likely need to be addressed by someone in I don’t know, orchestra? Or Piano for those portions. But really, I don’t think anyone wants a game with sonic disney music in japanese being played on rock band…..wait. o___o SONIC CAN’T WAIT TO BE FAST!? NANDE? 100% on expert. lol.
LONG THOUGHTS into tiny font XD
I'll be updating this periodically.
Day one of Kates Career journal.
The Big Jump.
If I’m going to become what I want to be, I need to know it all, so that when the professionals come in they won’t take me for granted.
I want to be able to concept wat I draw, then design it, then program it without people looking at me like I need help. Of course I’ll need help. I wont deny that in a world with such differing jobs all sitting together I’ll need help. But I don’t want to feel stupid or get ripped off by ‘the best’. I need to learn a sense of music, maybe not play it but know how I want it to sound. I want to be able to do voicing so that the humans or creatures won’t be stiff and static, that will NEVER be a problem though, I’ll make sure of it.
As for a story, I’m not too good at a middle. I need writers who CAN truly write, not me and my wannabe skills. Someone that can put my words on paper and sound good. I need to be able to market, whether viral or in print. I need to be able to beta my own work, first and foremost, before anyone else gets to see it. Each of these things, they get split in to so many little things.
A conceptor:
Concepts the background
Characters
Items
Other important things
A designer:
has to make the
Scenery
Characters
Items and other important things LOOK real.
Programmers have to:
Make events work
Make characters move
Create an efficient button system that NOT ONLY has a simplistic learning curve but something that challenges the gamer.
And just with those things they have to pour it into a 40+ hour game. I believe that if I have to sell it for 60 dollars people should pay cheaply for each of those hours.
A 4 hour game should be 5 dollars. Not 15.
With music not only do I have to make a score that fits the theme of the game, but I have to (if needed) create theme songs with words that don’t feel forced and fit the music. ‘Why’ is an exellent example. Sanctuary? Nooot so much.
A story must have a compelling opening to keep the gamer hooked, drawn in. In a sense I believe developing MANY characters is good, but not over the top. A Bad example is Naruto, with like 3 main characters, your forced to like at least one of them, but then theres like 6983274350499 minor characters. A GOOD example of character development and diversity is the world ends with you, where there are just about 10 characters to follow, and while some of the characters have stereotypical phrases, what they say are so unstereotypical that you’ll remember them.
A background to the story is important as well, and is difficult to write out, because many are cliched. An age of prehistoricism is stereotyped to either IRW (in real world) dinosaurs, in cartoons the flintstones, and lastly in anime something along the lines of a FEUDAL era aka inuyasha. A good example of background in gaming has to be shadow of the collossus, because the whole ordeal gives you this ‘empty’ feeling. Wanderer is the ONLY one around besides these giant creatures, and then to learn he dies, makes the world seem even more empty.
As for the story, that’s the most difficult. Even with compelling characters and an interesting background, if its ‘we have to saaaaaave the world!!!!” is annoying. But a more personal level makes the characters seem selfish, which is idiotic because most people in the world are extremely selfish. I mean I don’t see us building schools in pakistan.
For the ending of the story you have to decide if its cliffhung or you want it to end there. A franchise will allow for your story to be long, but as with many long stories, characters aren’t interesting enough for us to care about them that long. One hit wonders get better marks because your not dealing with the story THAT long and is much faster paced. But down the line, DBZ, or say megaman or sonic (both better known for there early years) would be proven to be GREAT franchises. The problem with different iterations of the same thing is that awful comparisons by the fans “this wasn’t like this” this was better than this” even though as the designer you wanted the fresh start to begin with.
Then comes the genre. Shooting fighting rpg platforming strategy racing etc etc etc…..
Shooting has had a major push in the last few years, with RPGs on the decline. People want to play things that are more fast paced I would assume, and even with these ‘newer’ battle systems (which to me are upsettingly fustrating THE RAT IS IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE CUT IT OPEN).
Platforming has had a decline as well, with so many games looking like each other. Mario added the gravity into play, which is a good addition, but not something to carry the franchise beyond that game.
Something completely new would be exciting but incredibly difficult, or someone ELSE would have done it. A Great example is that of LittleBigPlanet, with its all customization ideals and ‘you make it’ levels.
Then comes the marketing. TV hurts money-wise, viral marketing (in the sort of games) is somewhat moronic, rather show your fans that you aren’t foolish. The halo ilovebees game was imo stupid because it had people wasting there lives on hype. Hype is good but you have to show off the game when getting a start. For example, if a mario game comes out, people buy it. A movie game comes out, people buy it regardless if it is good. If the game is sort of humorous, you have to show that side. Sometimes, like with final fantasy 12s marketing “LOOK a new final fantasy!” which turned of MANY people who had faith in the series. And of course there doing it again with 13. “look its got pretty people! But we’re not telling you anything about them or the story : D “ foolish.
Graphics aren’t as important as they seem nowadays. The “BEST LOOKING GAME EVAR” is final fantasy hands down. Style is needed and POLISH. I love to say polish because its very true. Super smash bros didn’t have realistic fat plumbers or ugly yellow rats running around. There were cutesy characters with polish. The older games tried using graphics to there advantage but sometimes ended with a scary looking game (with the right anatomy Metal gear solid) And with so many games looking ‘GREAT’ theres no point in creating the best looking game, but one that makes people go ‘wow!’
I will most certainly not do a dirt game. G.r.i.m.e. every shooting game has it, and several other franchises. I was somewhat dissapointed in SC4 because while the game had polish, I couldn’t find the green in the color pallette. Seiong mina was the greenist thing there (who would have thought a person rather than the BG) and so many castles just turned me off.
On the other hand I have no intention of making a pink game. Bright pastels will be thrown out the door, stepped on, then put in yi’s mailbox XD. I love lush lands, and believe that a game can look great without the SUPER detail that is shown in grime games. With splinter cell, being dark is what its about. I don’t expect sam fisher to run around in a coldesac rolling in bright green grass going ‘I CAUGHT ANOTHER BAD GUY : D “ nor do I expect such lush green in resident evil (zombies?) but it would be funny if they did.
NAMING. Oh my I forgot a great aspect of gaming. If you are playing as a character, there has to be variety here. ‘mario, donkey kong, pikachu, marth, roy.” Good variety in people and creatures. You will not name your giant lochness monster Bob. Not happening. Nope. On the flip side his name shouldn’t be a crazy hispanic with like 800 names. I’m the worst with names tho, so I should not be talking.
In bouzouki (note the name of the series, which is referenced to the sport in the game called bouzouki ‘the ball’ happens to be IRW a string instrument .)
My characters were such like
- ‘Nick 182’ and then known as ‘Nickolas Larcross’ Where I got the name? Pfft I don’t know
- His friend ‘Emako’ or ‘mako for short, again, don’t remember why his name was such.
- Another character was someone unnamed but after redrawing him this year his name became ‘Kai-ser’
- And the paralell, a dog-like creature ‘Mal’ of which a year later I would come to meet a ‘mal’ and become good friends with.
In Tovuja (again with this stupid naming pattern)
-Tovuja is the main character. His inspiration, in fact the entire story is inspiraled by Inuyasha. Its pronounced ‘toe- vu- ya’
-His best friend, is Mankeeh. Mankay is in fact a somewhat logical name for me, the alluded, ‘man’ stood for the human portions of the body and the ‘kay’ is for his birdlike genes. A ‘Mankay’ is the species, and aren’t given names, but tovuja decided to name this mankay ‘mankeeh’ which doesn’t differ in sound but at least makes him different from his anscestors.
-Then comes Aaron, the deamon portion of Tovuja, who I believe was partly inspired (more or less I decided it) after meeting an Aaron Dotson back in art club. Probably the most regretful of my 8th grade was not keeping in touch with that spazz.
-Next is “Christine” and theres really no question there :]
-Then comes the 1/16th of a deamon ‘Dario’ and ive used this name and variations on several occasions when I couldn’t think of a name (a fire mage in my first series was named darin) but it seemed to stick to Darios character so.
- There main enemy, Forsixa. Nope, really NO clue how I came uponn that name (four, six, ah. Horrah for even numbers), I was trying to find something somewhat dreading (as for the main evil) but not to the point of where you FEAR his name (hes no sephiroth or voldemort).
- and lastly, a recurring character by the name of Ashley. NOT inspired by who you’d think it would be, I know tragic. I came up with that name in like whatever class was pottery or basically crafts, from a very nice girl whom I talked with in that class named ‘Ashley’ and a couple months I would come to know and have a long distance friendship with, Ashly. :)
Sorry Cheeto, never had anything named after you D:
My names either foreshadow or make no sense.
Names I believe are retarded but I cannot judge
Vaan. Just sounds gay.
Nooj. Stereotypical.
I’ll think of some others.
Names I believe are a great that fit the character.
Kratos from God of War. Just sounds mythological to me.
Yuna from FF10. Her name always struck me right.
And names that make me laugh when thinking about it.
VEGETA. Vegetable and the saiyan prince don’t mix. Maybe in a blender though.
SCHERAZADE. (sheh, hera, zah day) Theres definitely a reason behind that one but not the one you’d think of. Non-inside joke wise, she looks and and her name fits that of an elf princess. Her voice….well someone needs to tape her mouth shut.
So that’s my take on naming.
I’ve begun to be very critical on my gaming (well rpgs and other games, im not critical in PATAPON or pixeljunk, which is a very fun series btw) on how they set up certain things. Such as (and Ive used this example before, in ff10 how yevon is clearly there ‘god’ but me not seeing it when I was younger that hes just a placemarker for peoples prayer (such as how the catholic church in earlier times would use god as a means of moneymaking on those who had hard times and believed god could help them) people in ff10 believe that yevon is there answer to the main problem, sin, because of the direct contrast. (sin- satan; kills, yevon – god; saves)
Another happens to be death scenes. Because I think very hard nowadays, the ending of FF7 Crisis core definitely caught me by surprise. Playing through an entire game to watch zack die was tragic. We knew it was going to happen, but to see how much he worked towards freedom (and ultimately only to clouds freedom) was truly heartbreaking. Then knowing that Cloud lost what was his only friend, instead of living in the shadow of him, he lost himself in zack to the point of BECOMING zack. Or at least taking on his accomplishments
Other ‘oh em gees’ moments for me at least was in The World Ends With You in that SPOILERS Joshua being the game master. For a game to have a purpose and to SEE the purpose in action was a nice change rather than like in ff10 when you ‘kill sin’ you somewhat felt empty. This is however relieved by ff10-2 with yuna patching things up in the new world without sin.
And, not really story was oh em gees happened to be Sonic rush and Rush adventure. When there are so many bad games in a row, you don’t look forward in series’ like that. It shocked me how well the games played, used the mechanics of a sonic game without messing up the challenge or being quote’ too fast. Then to add waterbikes and other such ideas (gummi ships to kh fans) that were implemented not so horribly that you DREAD doing them (except the sailboat, that was wayyyyyyyy too chaotic). But yes, the games revitalized my sonic self and currently wait for the newest sonic next month.
Speaking of which, just to finish this off, games I currently want to play:
Sonic chronicles brotherhood: first SONIC RPG. We’ll see how that goes.
Pokemon Platinum: because its ANOTHER pokemon game.
LittleBigPlanet: what I didn’t stress this one enough?
Ratchet and Clank quest for booty: I need some platforming high.
So yes anyways this is my world. This is why I’m SO critical about everything. When you enter games, careers in fact and this school stuff, this is what I’m pointed to. And NO MATTER, NO matter whose better than me, I’ll succeed. I don’t need to be student of the month, most artistic, or even most computer saavy. Watch me. I’ll succeed.
AND babysit AND get the 3 doom children on gba. BwahahahaHAHAHAH I’ve already got holley where I want her. : D
